Can Your Diet Help with Your Crohn’s Disease?

Can Your Diet Help with Your Crohn’s Disease?

People who suffer with Crohn’s disease know that certain types of foods can cause severe outbreaks. Due to this many people feel that a proper diet cannot be accomplished when suffering from Crohn’s. There are many different approaches you can take to help relieve your symptoms and diet is definitely one of them.

A balanced diet can be a problem for a person with Crohn’s disease. Taking a multi vitamin daily can help to ensure that your body is receiving all the nutrients needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Start by keeping track of the food you eat. Keep a daily diary that includes every food you eat and how your body reacts to those foods. Be sure to include how the food was prepared. By doing this you will know what types of foods you can eat and how to prepare these types of foods.

Another way to help is eat several times a day. Try smaller amounts of food and less variety. For instance at breakfast just have a couple of foods. Then eat again in a couple of hours and only a small amount. By doing this your body has a better chance of digesting the food easier and it helps in keeping your diary.

Start by eating foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids or “good fats” like fish oil. Fish oil is found in fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, sardines, mackerel and lake trout. Also try flax seed in your diet. You can incorporate these into baked items or as a topping. If placing these items in your daily diet is not helpful to you then try supplements found in a health store.

Many suffers of Crohn’s disease are lactose intolerant. Try consuming less milk products or purchase products that are prepared for people who are lactose intolerant.

High fiber foods can also be difficult to consume. Try cooking these items a different way. Baked or steamed items can help reduce the effects of fiber foods.

Eat a low carbohydrate diet. Simple sugars can be very difficult to digest and can cause diarrhea. Carbohydrates tend to feed the bacteria that grows in the digestive system and causes diarrhea and severe pain. By eating a low carbohydrate diet you can starve the bacteria in turn keeping flare-ups from happening as often.

Also try a high protein diet that includes very little fat. If you suffer from Crohn’s disease you know that your digestive tract can’t absorb fat. By eating a high protein diet you lessen the chance of eating the fat that causes symptoms from your disease.

Trying some of these ideas, along with ideas that your doctor may recommend, may help with the painful symptoms of Crohn’s disease. A healthy diet will help ensure a healthier life and a happier you.
