Easy Ways to Keep Kids Occupied at Thanksgiving

Holidays can be hard on children. Thanksgiving is no exception. There are the parades of course and all the family and friends that come by along with all the food but it can still be very boring to a child.

Keeping Children Happy on Thanksgiving

One way to help their boredom is to give them things that will keep them occupied all day. Games, crafts and even helping Mom in the kitchen can be enough to keep any child from becoming too bored. Here are a few ideas on way to keep the happy and having fun on Thanksgiving Day.

Be sure to have many items around for them to play with. They don’t have to be expensive - just fun. Things such as coloring books and crayons, puzzles and even some books they can read will help to keep them occupied for awhile. Board games are a lot fun and children can get wrapped up in playing them. Before they know it it’s time to head home or hit the hay. Have games that are suited for all ages so no one feels left out.

Let them help you cook. They can help in the kitchen with cooking, cleaning and even setting the table. After that big meal no one wants to have to clean up the mess. Let the children do it. Believe it or not they like to help. It may not be perfect but who cares it gives them something to do and helps you out also.

Give them the means to make things. Crafts can be a lot of fun for children. They don’t need much. Construction paper, markers, glue, scissors, stickers, glitter glue and stencils are enough to keep them busy for hours. Have them make placemats for the table or make items that you use to decorate the house. Children love to make things and it can keep them occupied for hours at a time.

Let children spend time with the older guests. Grandparents love to spend time with smaller children. Ask them to bring some pictures from back in the day. They can show them to the kids and tell the wonderful stories behind them. It’s all a part of their family heritage and kids will enjoy listening and learning.

Give them presents. Sounds rather strange giving presents on Thanksgiving but with children it can make their day. Hand them out as they come in the door. They don’t have to be extravagant. Things such as cars, trucks, baby dolls and even a bucket and shovel can entertain children. Try the local dollar store to see what they may have for very little money.

Sometimes we find our selves forgetting about the children and how bored they can become. With everything that’s going on it’s easy to do that. Keep them entertained and you’ll have no problems with hearing I’m bored. Remember there’s always the story of Thanksgiving to tell them when all else fails.
