To Top or Not to Top Your Salad
What is the first thing you see at your favorite salad bar? Bet it is the huge bowl of iceberg lettuce at the beginning. Bur you may not see the other types of lettuce available to you, like romaine, spinach and even the kind that looks like weeds. Mix and match to create a unique flavor or stick to your favorite kind…the choices are yours.
What now? Think about all those bright and beautiful colors to put on your salad, green, white, red, and yellow. Broccoli, red peppers, cauliflower and even those little itty bitty ears of corn and mushrooms. Did you know that those little ears of corn that you see in stir fry at the Chinese restaurant are great cold and on a salad?
How many vegetables do you get in your daily meals? What you don't know is that almost any vegetable will work in a salad and provide you with at least your daily dose of nutritional value.
Like fruit? You can add nutritional value to your salad by adding the fruits you like. Fruits add great taste and color to your salad. Add some strawberries, pineapple, banana, blueberry or some other types of berries. Dried fruit and raisins are also great for adding a sweet taste and mix well with the other toppings you might have selected.
Then you get to the end of the salad bar and there are croutons, bacon bits, nuts and even seeds. All these sound and taste really good and can add great flavor to your salad. But even red pepper flakes, Parmesan cheese, bean sprouts and water chestnuts are great additions to a salad.
Top your salads with anything you like…the choice is yours and yours alone. You might never have considered some of these things as salad toppings but you can choose to top or not to top with anything on the salad bar. Add different things each time and choose a new taste sensation.
Go to your kitchen and get busy, picture the salad bar as a starting point but make it your own. Remember the sky is the limit. Make your salad count!
