Food Ideas for a St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

Soups made with lamb are a wonderful Irish food. There are many versions of soups that are easily made. Lamb is a great meat and very versatile. Adding potatoes to any soup brings a little Irish to the mix. Stews made with an assortment of vegetables are not only tasty, but can give a little warmth to your celebration. Can’t forget the beer based soups. What St. Patrick’s Day celebration would be complete without a beer and cheese soup or dip?

Shepherd’s pie is also a great idea for an Irish dish. It can be made with lamb or beef. Sauté some onion and add vegetables such as potatoes, peas and carrots. After the vegetables are cooked to your liking, add beef broth and boil. Once it is boiling well add a little flour to thicken. When the mixture is as thick as you want it stir in some finely chopped meat.

Place all the ingredients into a pie plate and add some mashed potatoes to the top and bake in the oven. When the pie is almost done sprinkle some cheese on the top and finish baking until the cheese is melted. It’s easy to make and will be a big hit with all the guests.

What’s St. Patrick’s Day without corned beef and cabbage? Many say it brings the luck of the Irish to those who eat corned beef and cabbage. It’s a pretty easy dish to make. Boil the meat (including the contents of the seasoning packet) for about 3 hours. Add quartered potatoes about 1 hour before the meat is done. Quarter a head of cabbage. Remove the meat and add the cabbage to the pot. Cook about 15 minutes or until the cabbage is tender.

A Killarney cake is a great ending to the perfect meal. This cake is pretty easy to put together. Use a chocolate fudge cake mix and add crème de menthe instead of the water. Chop green cherries and add them to the mix. Tint whip cream with a green food coloring and place between the layers of the cake. Top with whip cream and some green cherries and you have a dessert to die for.

Shamrock cookies also make a nice addition to any St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. Simply, bake your favorite sugar cookie (be sure to add green food coloring to the mix prior to baking) and cut into clover shapes.

Traditional Irish foods are meant to be savored. With a little luck of the Irish your St. Patrick’s Day Celebration can be a great hit! By cooking foods that are meant for any Leprechaun to enjoy it’s a guarantee to be a fun and enjoyable time for everyone.
