Starting an Organic Compost Pile

Organic foods have begun to come to the forefront for many people’s eating choices. Finding these types of foods can be easy if you know exactly where to look. They can also be expensive in some places, so how do you eat healthier without breaking the bank?

How to Begin an Organic Compost Pile

The best way to obtain organic foods is by growing them yourself. In order to do this you need to start a compost pile in the fall. Compost is important as a fertilizer for organic foods. It keeps the soil rich in nutrients and fertilizes it so the foods can grow and prosper during the spring and summer.

Organic compost piles are made up of three ingredients – brown materials, green material and water. Brown material emits carbon into the compost pile. Carbon is needed to give energy to the compost which in turn puts energy into the soil to help the plants grow. Green material is also necessary. The green material places nitrogen into the compost pile. Nitrogen is necessary to help provide nutrients to the soil. Water is the third necessary ingredient. Water keeps the compost moist so it can emit the energy and nutrients.

Some items that can be considered brown material that are easy to find are leaves, sawdust, wood chips and even corrugated boxes. Start the compost pile by raking the leaves in the yard in a pile. Add the other types of material as you go along. Of course leaves can be continually added to the pile as they fall.

Green material consists of things such as grass clippings and weeds. Fruit and vegetable scraps and even coffee grounds make good green material. There are all full of nitrogen and can help the compost pile thrive over the winter months.

Water is also very important to a compost pile. It is necessary to keep all items placed in a compost pile damp. Adding water helps break down the elements in the compost pile. The breaking down of these elements is what emits the necessary carbon and nitrogen from the brown and green materials.

It’s best to keep a compost pile in a dry, shady area and near a water source. This may be difficult for someone who lives in a big city or even in an apartment, but don’t let that stop you. There are many places where you can purchase a compost bin to hold all of your materials. No matter where you live or how you contain your compost pile, be sure to stick to equal parts of brown and green material and keep the water contained to the compost. Always remember to cover your compost pile too. This will help keep the moist air in so the compost doesn’t dry out and become less effective.

Compost is probably the most essential part of an organic garden. Having the right balance in the soil and a fertilizer that will keep the soil healthy without using any chemicals is necessary to grow thriving plants. It’s not hard to do nor is it really time consuming. Best of all it’s the beginning of a great garden of healthy foods to enjoy all year long without spending all your hard earned money.
