1. Clean the beets well.
2. Slice the beets thinly.
3. Place the beets in a large skillet.
4. Add the salt and the water.
5. Cover the skillet and cook on medium heat for 12 minutes.
6. Uncover and continue cooking 2 minutes.
7. Add the butter and the syrup.
8. Stir to cover the beets with the butter and syrup.
9. Reduce the heat to low.
10. Continue cooking for 18 minutes being sure to stir occasionally to keep the beets covered with the butter and syrup.
