1. Mix together the flour, baking powder and soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and cloves in a bowl.
2. Beat the butter for 30 seconds then add the sugar slowly, beating as you go, then adding 1 egg, beating, then the other egg, beating.
3. Alternate adding a little of the flour mixture, then a little applesauce to the butter mixture, then a little more of each, beating after each addition until everything is added.
4. Pour the batter into a greased 13 X 9 baking pan and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 40 minutes.
Cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves is the triple-threat in this dessert cake. This trio is the basis for just about any dish or drink that makes you get all warm and fuzzy inside. p.s. You might want to frost this cake with a cream cheese - whipped cream style frosting, or just serve with ice cream or whipped cream.
