1. Mix together the flour, baking powder and soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and cloves in a bowl.
2. Beat the butter for 30 seconds then add the sugar slowly, beating as you go, then adding 1 egg, beating, then the other egg, beating.
3. Alternate adding a little of the flour mixture, then a little applesauce to the butter mixture, then a little more of each, beating after each addition until everything is added.
4. Pour the batter into a greased 13 X 9 baking pan and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 40 minutes.

p.s. You might want to frost this cake with a cream cheese - whipped cream style frosting, or just serve with ice cream or whipped cream.
