Benefits of an Herb Garden

Growing your own herb garden has many benefits beyond just cooking. Learn the many ways herbs you grow in your own herb garden can be used.

The Many Benefits of an Herb Garden

Take a long look into your spice cabinet. It’s amazing how many of those herbs you can grow on your own. Cooking is not the only benefit of herbs though. Herbs can be used for many different things. Growing an herb garden can bring all these benefits right to your kitchen plus herbs grown in your yard can bring color and beauty to your home.

Most people know that herbs are great for cooking. Growing these types of herbs is pretty easy. Such herbs as basil, bay, chives, dill and rosemary are just a few of the herbs available. These types of herbs grow in large amounts and it takes very little when cooking so there will be plenty to go around. Also growing fresh herbs makes them taste better. When packaged and placed on a shelf they start to loose their flavor after a period of time. Fresh herbs right from the garden give you great fresh flavor and also a wonderful aroma.

Medicine is also another use for herbs. Herbal medicine not only cost less but there are fewer side effects, These types of herbs can include Golden Seal, Yarrow, Echinacea, Fennel, St. John’s Wort and many more. Some say there’s magic in these types of herbs. Growing your own will be one way to find out for sure.

Herbs can be beautiful to look at once they begin to flower. They also have a wonderful scent. Many flower gardeners place herbs in their flower garden just for the scent. Placing herb flowers in a bowl and placing them on a table or in a bathroom can make the whole room fragrant.

Giving herbs as a gift is another benefit. Use them in a recipe basket. Type the recipe on a pretty piece of stationary then adds all the ingredients necessary including homegrown herbs. Given to someone who enjoys cooking this can be a very thoughtful gift. Give someone a fragrance basket. If you have a friend or family member who enjoys candles because of their wonderful scent this would make a great gift for them to receive. Even someone who uses herbs for medicinal purposes may enjoy a basket full of herbs they can use. Herbs make great gifts especially when home grown.

Growing your own herbs can be a business in itself. Making money from such an enjoyable hobby seems strange but with the growth of herbs over the last few decades it can also help to make someone's dream of owning their own business a reality. Not only can you sell them to everyday customers but also many companies are buying home grown herbs to make their products. Experiment with herbs and find your own blend to market and sell.

An herb garden can have many benefits. It gives you fresh herbs for your own use as well as use for many other people. Taking the time and effort to grow herbs and the benefits you can reap from an herb garden are well worth it.
