Money Saving Kitchen Products

Does it ever cross your mind how our ancestors always seemed to keep food on the table even in hard times? We desperately long to know their secret when we are dropping hundreds of dollars at the grocery store every week. As a matter of fact, it isn't a secret at all. This required good planning and preparation on their part. Our dollars will stretch farther once we realize this and begin practicing as they preached.

Five Money Saving Kitchen Products

How far our food will stretch depends on what we have on hand. Filling our pantry with a few useful products can be the difference between trips to the grocery store each week versus once or twice a month.

The first item is flour. For many recipes flour is a starter item. Flour added to some water will make gravy for many meat dishes. Flour is used to make bread such as biscuits, rolls and loaves. It is also used to make coating for chicken. Flour is also used to coat a cake pan to prevent the cake from sticking. You can also use flour in many delicious cookie recipes.

The second is rice. Rice is a side dish but that doesn't mean it has to be plain. You can jazz up your rice with vegetables to accompany dinner. Rice can also be used to make a dessert called sweet rice. Combine the rice with some evaporated milk and sugar and warm it in the microwave. This is a tasty after dinner treat. Rice pudding is also a popular dessert. You can even mix rice with leftover meat and a cream soup to form a casserole. There are many creations you can come up with by just using rice.

The third is pasta. There are a lot of different pasta choices and they are all great. Tomato sauce and cheese can be stuffed into Manicotti pasta. Combined with cheese or spaghetti sauce macaroni can be used to make a creamy salad. Spiral pasta is great in different types of pasta salad. Spaghetti works well in a casserole topped with cheese. It can also be used in the traditional way with tomato sauce and meat.

The fourth are spices. Salt and pepper are not the only way to season foods. There are a number of spices that taste better than salt. Just to name a few of the spices you can use there is cayenne pepper, chili powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, oregano and garlic powder. These are all useful tools in your flavor arsenal to add a fresh new taste to your foods.

The fifth and last is beans. Edamame beans can be used to top your salad. Black beans make an awesome dip and baked beans go well with grilled foods. Beans provide a good source of protein and contain very little fat. For a simple yet filling meal beans work well in soups, stews and even over rice.

Do you have these products in your kitchen? There are actually several more that will enhance your pantry and save you a little money. These products listed will get you off to a good start. You can add to the list with your own basic kitchen products that are versatile and economical.
