There are a lot of foods that are vital for our health. Many of our diets today are high in fat, salt, cholesterol and other substances that can create a variety of health problems. It is good to know that there are certain foods that can actually improve our health


The Top Four Power Foods

People have been discussing the topic of so-called "power foods" lately. Power foods have been proven to have certain health benefits. These benefits include boosting the immune system, slowing the aging process, and even fighting chronic diseases. It would be wonderful to achieve all of these things without having to take medication.

Phytochemicals are the secret to these power foods. These compounds can be found naturally in certain plants. These plants are used for food. Below are four of the top phytochemical-containing power foods.

First, Goji Berries

Many people have been turned off by the hype surrounding the goji berry. The goji berry is a remarkable little fruit. These little wonders have two beneficial phytochemicals: beta carotene and zeaxanthin. Goji berries contain large amounts of these nutrients. Studies have shown these nutrients to be highly effective in reducing the risk of certain cancers. Studies have also shown that goji berries can reduce bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol.

Goji juice is very expensive. Goji berries can be bought at Asian markets at a much more reasonable price. Goji berries are often consumed dried in trail mix, cereals and baked goods.

Second, Kefir

Culturing milk with kefir grains, which are made of yeast and bacteria, is how kefir is made. Kefir is similar to yogurt, but the nutritional benefits are greater in kefir. It can lower cholesterol and is good for the immune system.

Kefir is consumed as a beverage and can be used to make delicious and nutritious smoothies. It curbs hunger so it is good for people who are watching their weight.

Third, Garlic

Garlic has often been used as an herbal remedy for a number of ailments. Garlic is great at fighting infections and can help regulate blood pressure. It is also high in nutritional value.

Garlic is full of protein, potassium, calcium, zinc, and vitamins A, B and C. According to studies garlic lowers cholesterol and reduces the incidence of cancer.

Fourth, Kale

When you think of leafy green vegetables you often think of "rabbit food" right? Those leafy green vegetables actually contain a lot of essential nutrients. Kale is among one of the most nutritious vegetables in this group of power foods.

Kale is loaded with carotenoids. Carotenoids are known for fighting numerous types of cancer. Kale also contains potassium, calcium, iron, folic acid and vitamins A and C.

These are only four of the many power foods that are available today. With a little effort we can easily eat one or more of these beneficial foods each and every day. They can even be included in each meal. If we do this it will help us have happier, healthier and longer lives.
